Whicher References resin with a polyacrylic matrix. A polystyrene resin without ion exchange groups (“Bio Beads SM 2,” Bio-Rad Laboratories) has a small but significant affinity for thiocyanate. In contrast, the strongly basic anion-exchange resins Amberlite IRA-400 and Amberlite IRA-410 (Rohm and Haas) bind thiocyanate so strongly, presumably by electrostatic forces, that they are unsuitable for use in our thiocyanate assay. In conclusion: thiocyanate is bound to certain weakly basic anion-exchange resins with a polystyrene matrix at a high pH, where an ion-exchange mechanism is impossible. This effect may be used for analytical purposes and illustrates the possible importance of the matrix for separations on ion-exchangeresins.Consequently, manufacturers of such resinsshould not change their manufacturing procedures without notice to their customers, even if the changes do not involve the functional groups of the resin. Adsorption behavior of cationic and anionic species on chitosan resins possessing amino acid moieties.

Chitosan resins modified with amino acids, such as glycine, valine, leucine, and serine, were synthesized for investigating the adsorption behavior of cationic and anionic species, and showed good abilities for the adsorption of trace elements in aquatic media as follows: glycine for lanthanoids at pH 7, leucine for molybdenum at pH 1-5, serine for uranium at pH 2-7, and amino acids for bismuth...

The Recovery of Platinum, Palladium, and Gold from a Cyanide Heap Solution, with Use of Ion Exchange Resins

Ion exchange resins were investigated for the effective recovery of platinum, palladium, and gold from a pregnant cyanide heap leach solution. Screening results indicated that strong-base anion exchange resins proved to be most effective in the recovery of these metal cyanides. Gold was selectively recovered with the use of Minix, while effective recovery of gold, platinum, and palladium over t...

Enhanced adsorption and antifouling performance of anion-exchange resin by the effect of incorporated Fe3O4 for removing humic acid.

The application of anion-exchange resins (AERs) is limited by fouling, which increases the fresh resin dosage, regeneration frequency, and amount of regeneration effluent. In this study, five AERs with different Fe3O4 amounts was prepared by increasing the amount of Fe3O4 added to 100 g of monomer mixture for suspension polymerization from 0 g to 40 g. Results showed considerably improved pore ...

Chromate ion adsorption by agricultural by-products modified with dimethyloldihydroxyethylene urea and choline chloride.

The use of cellulose-containing agricultural by-products modified with the cross-linking reagent dimethyloldihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU) and the quaternary amine, choline chloride, as anion exchange resins, has not been reported. The objective of the present study was to convert the readily available by-products, soybean hulls, sugarcane bagasse and corn stover to functional anion exchange re...

Removal of thiocyanate ions from aqueous solutions using polypyrrole and polyaniline conducting electroactive polymers

Polypyrrole (PPy/Cl) and polyaniline (PAni/Cl) synthesized chemically onto sawdust (SD)was used for removal of thiocyanate (SCN-) ions from aqueous solutions. The effect of someimportant parameters such as pH, initial concentration, sorbent dosage, and contact time onuptake of SCN- was investigated. PPy/SD was found to be much more effective sorbent thanPAni/SD for uptake SCN- from aqueous solu...
